SWAT team ends standoff with armed man upset over ex-girlfriend

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — With the aid of gas, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactical Team was able to end an armed standoff at a home on 9th Place, south of Vero Beach around 1 a.m. Friday.

The special team was called out to the home after the suspect, identified as Dale Maine, chambered a round in a shotgun and refused to open the door. Authorities wanted to talk to Maine about a physical altercation between him and another man over an ex-girlfriend.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Thursday night, 27-year-old Maine went to the victim’s home on 4th Street to confront the man who was seeing Maine’s ex.

During the confrontation, Maine hit the victim in the head with a baseball bat, authorities said.

Maine is being held at the county jail on numerous charges that include felony aggravated battery, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm/ammo/electric device by a convicted felon, and misdemeanor charges of trespassing and cruelty to animals.

How the cruelty to animals charge is related to the case was not immediately known.
