Betty R. Williams, 76, Vero Beach

Betty R. Williams, 76, died Jan. 20, 2010, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach.

She was born in Cleburne County, Ala., and lived in Vero Beach since 2007. Before retirement, she was a spinner in the carpet yarn manufacturing industry.

Survivors include a son, George Williams of Fort Pierce; daughter, Ruth Martin of Vero Beach; brothers, Jack McWhorter of Oxford, Ala., and Roger McWhorter of Moss Point, Miss.; and sister, Geneva Cantrell of Boaz, Ala.

She was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother. Out-of-town arrangements are by the Etowah Memorial Funeral Home in Boaz.

Local arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home and Crematory in Vero Beach. A guest book may be signed at lowtherfuneralhome.com.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. Family, friends, marines honor ‘protector, hometown hero’

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Frank Strahorn was already considered a hero by his family, friends and marine brothers and sisters because of his military service around the world. Then, on June 19, the 34-year-old became a "hometown hero" after he was fatally shot while helping others escape a gunman carrying an AK-47 assault rifle at a Sebastian pizzeria.
