INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The next lecture in the Harbor Branch Ocean Science Lecture Series will be held at 4 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27. The presenter is Susan Laramore, Ph.D, speaking on Oysters Got the Blues: Emerging Bivalve Disease and Climate Variability.
Dr. Susan Laramore’s focus for the past ten years has been on aquacultured animals, with emphasis on health issues associated with crustaceans and bivalves. The lowly oyster might not be the most interesting creature in the world to watch, but it plays a crucial role in the ecosystem and has been a source of protein for thousands of years.
This lecture will focus on the importance of oysters, diseases of oysters, and how a changing climate might impact the health of oysters and other bivalve species.
An opportunity to meet the speaker follows each presentation; light snacks are provided after the 4 p.m. lecture and an appetizer buffet and cash bar follow the 7 p.m. presentation. The lectures are open to the public, free of charge and reservations are not required.
