INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Area organizations are seeking the community’s assistance in helping to provide items for the Haiti earthquake relief effort.
A donation drop off site has been established at 1110 US 1 in Vero Beach across from Staples where people can take non-perishable food and toiletries Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Medical supplies, too, would be appreciated, organizers said. The groups are requesting non canned goods due to the weight of the items.
“Food in plastic containers or boxes is preferred because of weight restrictions on the cargo planes,” Vero Beach resident Jon Pine said. “Rice and dry beans are a Haitian staple, but all sorts of nonperishable food is welcome.”
Vero Beach resident Jon Pine has organized the drop off location and has tents, tables and a utility box trailer for transport. However, he is looking for volunteers to donate time to man the donation center.
He is also searching for people who are willing to transport the collected donations in their trucks or vans to Missionary Flights International, in Fort Pierce. The group will by flying supplies to Haiti.
The Democratic Women’s Club will be taking up a collection during its luncheon Saturday at TiAmo Sempre between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
“There is a tremendous need for basic First Aid supplies such as bandages, antibiotic ointment, rubbing alcohol and over-the-counter pain medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen,” Pine said.
