VB American Little League registration Jan. 14, 15

VERO BEACH — Spring 2010 registration for Vero Beach American Little League Baseball will be Jan. 14 and 15 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Courthouse Executive Center, 2145 14th Ave. The four baseball divisions are: T-Ball – ages 5 and 6; Coach Pitch – ages 7 and 8; Minors – ages 8 through 11; and Majors – ages 10 through 12. Players must be league age by April 30 for each division. Registration fee is $90.

An original birth certificate and three additional forms of proof of residency are required at the time of registration. Proofs of residency may include driver’s license, voter’s registration, insurance documents and medical records. Utility bills, such as electric, water/sewer, phone and waste disposal count as only one of the required records. Boundaries for the 2010 Spring season have been revised from 2009 and will only apply to new in-coming players. Those eligible to play for Vero Beach American Little League must live west of 27th Avenue and south of 37th Street.

Try-outs are on Thursday, Jan. 21 for Majors and Friday, Jan. 22 for Minors at J.A. Thompson Field on 18th Street.

Opening Day is Saturday, Feb. 6.

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. Indian River County plans walking trail for former Dodgertown golf course

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The county is planning a major upgrade to the recently acquired defunct Dodgertown golf course. A roughly mile-long walking trail is slated to be carved out on the long-shuttered course, providing the public improved accessibility to the adjacent historic Jackie Robinson Training Complex with a pedestrian connection to 43rd Avenue and Aviation Boulevard. The proposed walking trail, which has yet to be designed and could be longer than a mile upon completion, will likely include a pedestrian bridge connection to the cloverleaf fields and a new tree line buffer along 43rd Avenue, according to county documents.
