VERO BEACH — Lieutenant Toby Turner, Indian River County Fire Rescue division of Emergency Services, addressed members of Exchange Club of Indian River October 18 at their regular luncheon meeting in honor of Fire Prevention Month. He discussed the importance of the installation and maintenance of home smoke detectors and provided helpful strategies for fire safety at home and in public buildings. Peter Armfield and Jan Binney won two smoke detectors in a trivia contest. Lt. Turner was introduced by Exchangite Marllyn Justice.
Exchange Club of Indian River meets for lunch at Culinary Capers each Wednesday at noon. Meetings feature programs on a wide range of business, government and civic, charity, personal, and professional topics. In months with five Wednesdays, the Club substitutes a just-for-fun evening social event such as this one for the lunch meeting.
The Club provides the community with programs in youth activities, service, and Americanism. Through participation in its national project, the Prevention of Child Abuse, it supports a number of local youth-related charities. The Club also honors students in the Vero Beach High School Performance-Based Diploma Program with Accepting the Challenge of Excellence (ACE) awards each year.
Club projects are supported by Exchange Club of Indian River Foundation’s fundraisers, including the upcoming Merry Christmas “Winner-Fest” Raffle to be held December 19 at the 6th Annual Winterfest at Pointe West. The Foundation’s other major event is the Annual Exchange Club Blue Water Open Charity Fishing Tournament held each Memorial Day weekend since 1977.
