School district wins grant for at-risk students

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The School District of Indian River County has been awarded a grant worth up to $2.4 million over five years to help at-risk students at Thompson Magnet and Pelican Island Elementary with academic and social activities outside of school hours.

The school district was one of 71 proposals recommended for funding by the Florida Department of Education with the first installment worth $557,999. Indian River County must re-apply for the funding each year. The two schools will operate a “21st Century Learning Center” which in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Indian River County and other community agencies, will provide a range of support for student learning and development, including: tutoring and mentoring, academic assistance, service learning, character education, physical education and recreational activities, and dropout prevention.
