John Robert “Jack” Bassett, 82, Vero Beach

John Robert “Jack” Bassett, 82, of Vero Beach, died Wednesday, Nov. 4 at his residence. He was born October 7, 1927 in Albany, N.Y. and had been a winter resident of Vero Beach since 1981 becoming a full time resident in 1992 coming from New Canaan, Conn. After a career in advertising and marketing in NYC he retired to Vero Beach. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane Bassett of Vero Beach; 2 sons, Peter Bassett of San Francisco, Calif., Michael Bassett of New York City, daughter, Wendy Patrick of Minneapolis and 5 Grandchildren. He was predeceased by his twin sister Jeanne. At the request of the family there will be no service. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. Arrangements are under the direction of the Thomas S. VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
