Fellsmere mom who left son in hot car gets probation

FELLSMERE — A Fellsmere mother who left her 20-month-old son in the back of her car as she ran errands this summer has received five years probation in the case, according to court records.

On Oct. 28, she entered a similar plea as that of Stephanie Salvilla-Werking, of Sebastian, who received the same sentence in court Friday. Alejandra Alvarado had been charged with aggravated manslaughter and leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle resulting in death.

The State Attorney’s Office dropped the manslaughter charge and agreed to five years probation on Oct. 28. Judge Robert Pegg, the same who presided over Werking’s case, agreed to the plea deal.

Like Werking, Alvarado is not a convicted felon, though the charge of leaving a child unattended is a third degree felony. As part of the plea deal, Judge Pegg withheld adjudication on the charge.

Alvarado had taken her son, Aiden, with her while running errands on June 13.

At the time of the incident, Alvarado told investigators that she stopped to attend to her business between 12:30 and 1 p.m. and did not realize until 5 p.m. that her son was still in the vehicle.
