Thomas Edwin Lutes, 81, of Vero Beach died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach.Mr. Lutes was born June 10, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio and moved to Vero Beach 15 years ago from Rochester Hills, Mich. Before retirement he worked as a Human Resource Manager for the Chrysler Company. Survivors include his wife Caryl Lutes of Vero Beach, sons Douglas Lutes of Indianapolis, Steven Lutes of Cincinnati and Timothy Lutes of Boulder, Colo., brother Roy Lutes of Piqua, Ohio and two grandchildren.  At the request of the family there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to one’s favorite charity.Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach, Florida.  Condolences may be sent through  www.seawindsfh.com/obit.php

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
