Sebastian’s Halloween contest draws magical, scary contestants

By Lisa Zahner

SEBASTIAN — About 75 kids of all ages turned out Saturday for the annual City of Sebastian Halloween Costume Contest in Riverview Park and the competition ranged from magical to scary.

Quite a number of princesses clad in pastel gossamer graced the stage while judges Beth Mitchell, Donna Keys and Police Chief Michelle Morris judged the entries. There were ninjas and a few skeletons. (Photo gallery at end) Some of the more creative costumes were a jellyfish and a tree, both homemade.

Ryan Roher, of Sebastian, crafted a very realistic 5-foot tall tree costume for his 4-year-old daughter Mareena over a period of about two weeks.

A plumber by trade, Roher made the frame out of wire coathangers and the bark and limbs of the tree with spray foam covered with textured paint. The effort netted the Roher family a win in the costume contest. Mareena was one of the top winners left standing on stage at the end.

“I made her costume last year, she was an ice cream cone,” Roher said. “We still have it, we will probably re-use it with Mareena’s sister, who is three years old.”

Before the final judging the kids enjoyed a game of limbo and afterward they tackled the Hula Hoop to round out the fun.

The Sebastian Lions Club was on hand selling popcorn, sodas and water to benefit their charitable efforts to improve care for the blind, sight impaired and for indigent people who cannot afford glasses and eye exams.
