Losing weight to educate

VERO BEACH — Chris Coach” Harrigan, physical education teacher at J. A. Thompson Magnet School, achieved a goal he never imagined by dancing away the pounds, and he’s not afraid to admit it.  Known throughout Indian River County as “Coach’, Harrigan lost over 100 pounds in two years by simply dancing and changing his eating habits.  Harrigan was looking for something to compliment his nutrition program, and after meeting Jill Price of CityFit Outdoor Fitness Camp and dancing to Zumba, the weight began to melt off.

Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a one hour, calorie-burning fitness program.  Not only was Chris hooked and ditching the pounds, he also became a certified Zumba instructor.

Price has organized a monthly fundraiser using Zumba as the backdrop, and to date has raised $1,050 to benefit the Education Foundation of Indian River County.

CityFit’s ZUMBA Party in the Park takes place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the first Friday of the month at Riverside Park in Vero Beach.  The cost is $7 per person or $12 for a couple with portion of the proceeds benefiting the Education Foundation.
