Power outage leaves hundreds of Vero Beach electric customers in the dark

By Debbie Carson, Online Editor

VERO BEACH — Between 600 and 800 Vero Beach electric customers in the west end of Vero Beach saw their power flicker or shut off over the course of nearly 2 hours Wednesday night, according to a Vero Beach Electric official.

The cause of the power outage was due to a bad insulator on a utility pole located at 12th Street and Kings Highway (58th Avenue), Randall McCamish, director of transmission and distribution for Vero Beach Electric Utility.

The outage affected residents and businesses between 58th Avenue and 32nd Avenue and 12th Street to 26th Street, on both sides of State Road 60. Some residents in the area reported their power to flicker or shut off for a moment or two, while others were without electricity for about 2 hours between 8:45 and 10:30 p.m.

McCamish said that crews located the problem insulator and replaced it. What caused the insulator to break down is unclear.
