Nathaniel Franklin, 70, Vero Beach

Nathaniel Franklin, 70, of Vero Beach, died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach after a brief illness.Mr. Franklin was born October 6, 1939 in Louisville, Ala. and has been a  resident of Vero Beach for 20 years from Groveland. Before his retirement he was a Grove Attendant for Hogan & Sons, Inc. in Vero Beach.   Survivors include his sisters Minnie Fann of Charlotte, N.C., Rosie Franklin of Calif., and Cathy Franklin of Eustis, cousin Henry Bowick of Fort Pierce and god-daughter Tamera Simmons of Vero Beach.  At the request of the family there will be no services. Memorial contributions may be made to VNA/Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida 32960.Arrangements are under the direction of Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach, FL. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘Tragic, sudden loss,’ – Memorials emerge for teen killed in ATV crash

With the sudden death of Sebastian River High School student Jake Beecher still fresh, family, friends, teammates and coaches continue to come to terms with the tragic crash that took his life. "He was well-liked by teammates and was extremely coachable. His coaches and teammates are taking it pretty hard," Sebastian River High School Athletic Director Jessica Upchurch said. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
