UPDATE: Woman in quadplex fire in Sebastian dies

SEBASTIAN — The Sebastian woman caught in a fire at a quadplex in Sebastian has died from her injuries, according to officials.

She and a man were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center after the fire on Louisiana Avenue Monday afternoon, fire officials said. She died at a hospital in Orlando.

The woman, who was lated identified as Karen Baker, 68, had been airlifted with serious burns on 70 to 80 percent of her body, according to Fire Rescue spokesman Brian Nolan.

Sebastian K-9 Officer Eric Antosia and Detective Ron Carlson pulled Baker from the home, police spokesman Officer Steve Marcinik said.

The man, identified as Baker’s husband, Jimmy Yates, 75, also suffered burns to his body though not as severe.

Yates was able to get out of the home on his own, according to Nolan.

The fire started in a back bedroom of the unit, Nolan said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“It’s hard to tell,” Nolan said of what might have caused the fire.

Three fire engines, a ladder truck and a couple ambulances were called to the scene and crews were able to get the blaze under control in 10 minutes.

The fire damaged only the one unit, according to Nolan, due to fire walls between the other units.
