INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Vero Beach and Sebastian residents have only a couple more days to register to vote in their respective municipal city council races on Nov. 3. The registration period ends Oct. 5.
Voters will be asked to select they candidates they want to represent them on the 5-member council. Vero Beach has two seats open while Sebastian has three.
In all, there are 14 candidates vying for five council seats. The Vero Beach City Council will continue to deal with controversial issues once the election is over and the top two candidates sworn in. Those issues include the Vero Beach electric rates and the debate over whether or not the city should – or could – consolidate its water and sewer service with the county’s service.
Incumbents Bill Fish and Debra Fromang in Vero Beach have chosen to run for reelection. They face four challengers, who include Ken Daige, Brian Heady, Charlie Wilson and Susan Viviano.
In Sebastian, incumbents Andrea Coy and Eugene Wolff have also decided to run for reelection. Fellow council member Dale Simchick declined to enter the race, leaving her seat vacant. There are six challengers, who include David DeVirgilio, Bob McPartlan, Alex Paternoster, Lisanne Monier Robinson, Joseph Scozzari and Donald Wright.
Registration is available during regular business hours at the Supervisor of Elections office located at 4375 43rd Ave., Unit #101 in Vero Beach from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Applications are also available at city halls, county offices, and libraries, and at the Supervisor of Elections Web site, www.VoteIndianRiver.com. Online applications must be printed, signed and returned to the Supervisor of Elections Office.
Requests for absentee ballots may be filled out online or by calling the Supervisor of Elections Office.
To be eligible to register to vote, residents must:
Be 18 years old or older (Pre-registration begins at age 16),
Be a U.S. Citizen,
Be a permanent resident of Indian River County,
Not be adjudicated mentally incapacitated (with respect to voting), and
Not be convicted of a felony (without having your rights restored).
