SEBASTIAN — Two Sebastian schools have received more than $20,300 combined, which they plan to use to fund after school programs, literacy programs and athletics.
The Indian River County School Board approved the money at its meeting Tuesday.
Sebastian Elementary received a Mardy Fish Foundation grant for nearly $6,400. The money is expected to be used for the school’s Cheer/Dance after school program.
Dollar General also donated to Sebastian Elementary, giving $3,000 to the school for its Early Literacy program. Lidochem donated $1,000 to the school to be used for its Academic Games.
Sebastian River High School was given $9,100 total from three donors, including $7,500 from Scholastic Sports Company. The donation will be used for athletic awards, post-season travel and athletic supplies.
Kirk and Patricia Maes donated $1,500 to the high school to be divided between Boys and Girls Cross Country and Boys and Girls Bowling teams to help make up for the budgetary shortfall of the sports.
The Professional Advisory Services Inc., of Vero Beach, gave $1,000 to Sebastian River High for its International Baccalaureate Program to be used for CAST (Cambridge University) tour.
During the school board meeting, the board members also approved another $31,000 worth of funding for several other schools that will be used for after school programs, athletics, and classes.
The largest single donation is from the Mardy Fish Foundation, which approved a $12,710 grant to Thompson Magnet Elementary south of Vero Beach. The funds will be used for after school clubs.
Osceola Magnet Elementary received $4,000 from an anonymous donor, according to school district records. The money will be used to purchase technology, reading and math materials.
Beachland Elementary was given a total of $6,275, part of which came from the school’s Parent Teacher Association. The PTA has stipulated that $4,775 be distributed to teachers to be spent on students’ supplies.
The school will spend the remaining $1,500 on classroom furniture.
Rounding out the schools receiving grants and donations is Fellsmere Elementary, which was given $8,000 from Frog Leg Festival Inc. The funds are to be used in the schools Art, Music, and Physical Education programs along with after school activities.
