St. Edward’s loses heartbreaker, 16-10

VERO BEACH — Quarterback Hunter Tremaine dashed 64 yards with 2:43 left in the fourth quarter Friday night to cap a 16-point comeback and lead Shorecrest Prep to a 16-10 triumph over St. Edward’s.

The Pirates, who built a 10-0 lead in the first quarter which they took into the locker room at halftime, fell to 1-1. St. Ed’s built the first-half lead on a 26-yard field goal by Dillon Benson and a 40-yard TD run by Cameron Budde.

It was all Shorecrest after a scoreless third quarter. Tremaine tossed an 8 yard TD pass, and a Shorecrest safety made it 10-8 in favor of St. Ed’s. Tremaine’s 64-yard TD run capped the scoring.

St. Edward’s Coach Brad Fojtik gave Shorecrest credit for making the necessary adjustments in the second half.

“Tremaine’s a real player,” said Fojtik.  “He came out after halftime and led them down the field.  Their execution and conditioning were excellent.”

Tremaine tortured the Pirates a year ago, when he gained over 150 yards and scored on three long TD runs.  Held in check the first half, he gained 164 yards in the second.

Fojtik remained positive after the loss.

“Our kids played hard, and we’ll be back next week,” said Fojtik.  “We’re going to work on execution this week, and our point of attack on the offensive line.”

St. Edward’s plays host to Merritt Island Christian School next Friday at 7 p.m.
