UPDATE: $75,000 bond set for persons of interest robbery-turned-homicide

VERO BEACH — William “Tazz” Anthony Peacock Jr. and Robert “Little Rob” Edward Carhart Jr., who were being sought in conjunction with a Vero Beach robbery-turned-homicide on August 28 had their first court appearance by videoconference Saturday morning before Judge Joe Wild on felony charges of dealing in stolen property.

Judge Wild set bond at $75,000 each for the defendants, who were picked up by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday on a warrant issued by Judge David Morgan. No family members spoke in the courtroom on behalf of the 21-year-old men.

The two were extradicted to Indian River County from Brevard and were booked into the Indian River County Jail at approximately 6 p.m. Friday. According to Vero Beach Police Department sources, Peacock and Carhart were arrested Wednesday afternoon following an 11-day, two-county manhunt.

The specific warrant on which they were arrested was for dealing in stolen property, according to Police Chief Don Dappen. Dappen said no other charges have been filed, but that the two are “persons of interest” in the ongoing homicide investigation.

It is not known exactly where authorities were able to track them down, but the location fell in the jurisdiction of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, which made the arrest. They were held at the Brevard County Jail pending extradiction to Indian River County.

Charges against Peacock and Carhart stem from a home robbery at the 1500 block of 41st Avenue on Aug. 28. Vero Beach Police Department officers were called to the house at 7:22 a.m. in response to a report of an injured person in the rear yard.

The victim of the robbery was severely beaten and found in the rear of his yard. He was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in St. Lucie County for treatment, but then died of his injuries on Sept. 2, turning the case into a homicide investigation, according to the Vero Beach Police Department. At that time, the photos of Carhart and Peacock were released to the media to solicit tips from the public in finding them in conjunction with a homicide.

Investigators went into the home and determined that items were missing from the house. It was reported that a large television was among the items taken. It is not known if any of the stolen items were recovered before or during the arrest.

The subjects had been staying at 1656 3rd Ave. SW, and prior to their arrest in Brevard County, were last seen there on Aug. 29, said Vero Beach Police spokesman Officer John Morrison.

Carhart’s next court appearance will be at 9 a.m. October 28 and Peacock’s next appearance will be at 8:45 a.m. on November 13. Both are expected to be represented by the Public Defender’s Office.
