FELLSMERE — Members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Fellsmere gathered this weekend in celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain. Festivities included a parade, soccer tournaments, English and Spanish Mass, and the crowning of the Queen of the Festival.

The two-day event served not only as recognition of heritage, but also as a fund-raiser for the mission. The event was free to attend, though there were refreshments for sale as well as arts and crafts. Saturday’s events began at 10 a.m. with a parade throughout Fellsmere. The parade featured numerous vehicles, floats and participants on foot.

Following the parade, there were soccer tournaments on the nearby fields. The tournaments began around noon.

All day long there was food, arts and crafts and entertainment.

The church held an English Mass at 4 p.m. and a Spanish Mass at 5:30 p.m.

Around 6:30 p.m., organizers crowned the Queen of the Festival.

Saturday’s celebration wrapped up around 11 p.m.

On Sunday, festivities began again with an 8:30 a.m. English Mass followed with a Spanish Mass at 10:30 a.m.

Soccer tournaments were held again at about noon with music and dancing rounding out the day.
