Staff ReportINDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Labor Day marks the end of Summer and means backyard barbecues and family gatherings. It also means that government offices are closed, garbage won’t be collected and bills will take an extra day getting to the mailbox.
Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday of September.
Originally Labor Day was celebrated in Canada, Greece, Turkey and Vietnam as a celebration of unions being legalized and protected. Labor Day in America was first recognized on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York, but it wasn’t until after the Pullman Strike in 1894 that Congress established the national holiday.
Closures:
Banks: Call for hours
Courthouse: All offices closed.
Garbage: No pick up in cities and county – collection to resume as scheduled.
Government Offices: All cities, towns and county offices closed.
Libraries: All branches closed.
Police/Sheriff: All administrative offices closed.
Post Office: Branches closed, no delivery or pick up.
Schools: Public, charters, private, colleges – all closed.
