Charlie Wilson throws hat in the ring for Vero Beach City Council

VERO BEACH — Local political commentator, broadcasting executive and community activist Charlie Wilson has declared his intention to seek a seat on the Vero Beach City Council in the November election. Wilson said he will file the paperwork with the City Clerk required by the Supervisor of Elections on Thursday.In a statement released just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, Wilson stated one motivation for running was outrage over the City Council’s handling of utility issues.”Inexcusable electric and utility rates as well as other recent decisions are impacting our quality of life. Businesses and residents cannot allow things to keep going like they are. We cannot and should not continue to pay for mistakes,” he said.The 58-year-old Wilson is a graduate of Martin County High School and an alum of Florida State University. The father of three, he has an extensive background in print and broadcast media and advertising and has also worked on major event promotions, including sporting events with the Los Angeles Dodgers.Wilson ran for the Indian River School Board District 4 seat in 2008. He is best known for his radio show and his weekly blog-newsletter entitled the “Indian River Report” and he is a constant presence at government meetings and civic events. Wilson has worked on several election campaigns and managed the victorious Circuit Court bid of Judge Bob Pegg in 2006. He is the former chairman of the St. Lucie County Taxpayers Association and served on the New Horizons Hospital Board.Wilson joins five others, including incumbents Bill Fish and Debra Fromang, who will compete for two seats on Nov. 3.
