Volunteers honored at Cancer Society luncheon

VERO BEACH — Volunteers were honored and officers installed at an Awards Luncheon sponsored by the Lakes at Pointe West and hosted by the Indian River Unit of the American Cancer Society.Honorees included cancer survivor Tracy Hinkle, the Courage Award for her positive outlook and motivation of others.   Dr. William McGarry received the Hope Award, recognizing his volunteercontributions in a cancer control area, and the Oechsner Award, for distinguished leadership, inspiration and humane concern.  Michelle Carter was honored with  the Taylor Award for Outstanding New Volunteer, recognizing her leadership as chair of the successful 2009 Relay for Life of the Beaches.  Terry Ann Higdon, the Special Appreciation Award for her work on the Look Good…Feel Better program.   Dr. McGarry passed the gavel to Ruth Ann Fleckenstein who will serve as chairman.  Nancy Madsen, area executive director introduced the new slate of officers, which includes Dr. Rob Callery, chair elect; Terry Ann Higdon, secretary; Wick Norwood, fiscal compliance advisor and Dr. Gregory MacKay, medical advisor.  Three new board members Maureen Leu, Julie O’Brien Norris and Dr. David Rodin, have joined Judi Beaumont, Gretchen Bibeau, Dr. Rob Callery, Debbie Chastain, Louise Colli, Micky Decker, Ruth Ann Fleckenstein, Carin Gribble, Elizabeth Graves-Bass, Larry Henry, Terry Ann Higdon, Jan Lauffer, Brenda Lloyd, Dr. Gregory MacKay, Valerie MacMillan, Dr. William McGarry, Dr. Edward Murphy, Wick Norwood, Dr. Patrick Ottuso, Karen Lampert Riley, Mary Schenkel, Jane Schwiering and Jack Taylor in the fight against cancer.  For information or volunteer opportunities, call toll free 1-800-ACS-2345, the Indian River Unit at 561-562-2272 or visit the web site at www.cancer.org.  The American Cancer Society, the Official Sponsor of Birthdays™
