Note handed to judge in Joe Baird trial causes stir, but no action

VERO BEACH — As the jury in the DUI trial of County Administator Joe Baird was led out of the courtroom, the seventh juror, which had been secretly designated the alternate, handed Judge David Morgan a note indicating that one of the selected jurors had a friend in the jury pool from Monday who was released due to her daughter being killed by a drunk driver.

Defense attorney Bobby Guttridge requested the juror be replaced with the alternate. Judge Morgan did not act on the information, indicating that he did not have evidence that the information was contrary to anything revealed in response to questioning of the 50 potential jurors.

A verdict is expected in the next few minutes, as attorneys are being called back to the courtroom.
