Evelyn Hicks Augustine, 91, of Vero Beach, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 at her home. Mrs. Augustine was born May 26, 1918, in Congers, N.Y., and moved to Vero Beach in 1981 from River Vale, N.J.
She graduated as the Valedictorian of her high school class in Congers and then worked as an executive secretary at Sylvania Electric Products, Inc. in New York City while attending Hunter College at night. She left civilian employment when she volunteered for Navy service as a WAVE during World War II. She served as a Control Tower Operator at Naval Air Station, Willow Grove, Pa., in the rank of Seaman First Class. Years later, when her children were grown, she returned to work as an executive secretary in the office of the Vice President of A&P Foods Quality Control Division in Montvale, N.J.
Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Gerard Augustine, of Vero Beach; son, Ken Augustine, of San Rafael, Calif., and daughter, Marilyn Augustine, of Arlington, Va.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach with a memorial celebration at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Father Michael Goldberg of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, Vero Beach will officiate. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
