Charles “Chuck” Edward Henkel, Sr., 93, of Vero Beach, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach after a brief illness. Mr. Henkel was born March 5, 1916, in Cleveland, Ohio, and moved to Vero Beach in 1978 from Winchester, Ky.
Prior to retirement he worked as an Electrical Engineer for 40 years, retiring from GTE in Winchester, N.Y. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1937 from Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi social fraternity; Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi honorary societies. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Vero Beach. Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Betty Jane, of Vero Beach; son, Charles Edward Henkel, Jr., of Middletown, Ohio; daughters, Hollace Ellen Quarles, of Williamsburg, Va., and Martha Anne Drach, of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 6 – 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home in Vero Beach. A Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
