Wayne E. Smith, 79, Vero Beach

Wayne E. Smith, 79, of Vero Beach, died Aug. 12, 2009, at his home. He was born in Charleston, W.Va., and lived in Vero Beach for 17 years, coming from his birthplace.

He served in the Air Force for 22 years, retiring as a master sergeant. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10210, Sebastian. Survivors include his sons, Marshall Smith, of Pennsylvania, and Timmy Proctor, of Charleston; daughter, Liza A. Laycock, of Metairie, La.; brother, Richard Smith, of Vero Beach; sister, Carol M. Smith, of Vero Beach; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Sue Smith.

Arrangements are by Strunk Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. Man shot after charging at deputy with small sword

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 29-year-old man who was shot by a deputy after charging at the officer with a small sword, was hospitalized late Friday, officials said. The unidentified man was taken by ambulance to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, Indian River County sheriff's spokesman Maj. Eric Flowers said. The deputy who fired the shot was not injured. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave, which is protocol for police-involved shootings. ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations.
