Lawrence ‘Larry’ M. Carter, 96, Vero Beach

Lawrence “Larry” M. Carter, 96, died Aug. 11, 2009, at the VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach. He was born in Harlan County, Ky., and moved to Vero Beach in 1984 from Pembroke Pines.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Morehead State College and his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. He taught school in Harlan County and Louisville, Ky., and also in Broward County, where he was a junior high school principal. He was a two-term member of the Kentucky State Senate from 1944 to 1952. He was a member of the Kentucky and Florida State Teachers Associations, the Kentucky Club, the First Baptist Church of Vero Beach and Hollywood and was a Master Mason in Kentucky and Florida.

Survivors include his sisters, Nell Stickley, of Jonesville, Va., and Lydia Kurylo, of Florida.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cawood Ledford Scholarship Fund, University of Kentucky, Memorial Coliseum, Lexington, KY 40506-0019.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Cox-Gifford-Seawinds Funeral Home and Crematory, Vero Beach.
