UPDATE: Sheriff turns to state resources to help find missing teen

Staff ReportVERO BEACH — As of Thursday morning, The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was “running out of leads” in the disappearance of 18-year-old Eric Self, according to Detective Steve Stoll.

Self’s information is being passed along to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for entry into its Missing and Endangered Persons Information Clearing House, which would distribute the teen’s description throughout the state and on the FDLE website.

Self was last seen by family members on Sunday, Aug. 9 at approximately 10 p.m. at his home west of Vero Beach. He is considered missing and possibly in danger. His parents woke up Monday morning to find him gone. Stoll said there was no forced entry at the house, nothing was disturbed and investigators could not find “anything they could identify” that Self had taken with him. He did not have a mobile phone, so investigators do not have that tool for possibly tracking him.

Self is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, has brown hair and hazel eyes and he wears a purple earring in his right ear. He was last seen at his home at the 8700 block of 20th St, Vero Beach. Since Self was reported missing, the Sheriff’s Office has conducted searches of the area on foot, with the K-9 unit, with the ranch and grove agricultural unit and with uniformed patrol deputies. A reverse 911 call was made to 1,000 phones in the area of Self’s home. The family and Sheriff’s Office are also distributing flyers throughout the area in hopes of locating Self.

The teen attends Indian River State College (Mueller Center). He travels by way of the “Go Line” transit system and is known to go to Pocahontas Park and the library in downtown Vero Beach. If you see Self or know his whereabouts, please contact Detective Steve Stoll at (772) 978-6119, or if you spot Self or have an urgent matter to report, call the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch 24 hours a day at (772) 978-6240 reference Case #2009-91169.
