VERO BEACH — Fourteen members of the Vero Beach American Little League plus their coaches got out of bed early and marched into a Rotary Sunrise Club 7 a.m. breakfast meeting asking for a very special favor. “We need urgent help with our field,” said league president David Luethje. “Unless we get improved drainage in the infield, we are in danger of seeing many of our future games postponed.” The field in question is the J. A. Thompson Rotary Field on 16th Street. “We will definitely put funds aside for these Little Leaguers, and we’ll also find the labor from within our club to help in any way we can,” said Tom Wake, president of Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise. “Our very own Coach Jim Thompson told me that if these kids can get up that early in the day to make their case then they deserve our full attention,” he added.
