Emerson Center announces its 2009-10 Humanities Series

VERO BEACH — The Emerson Center at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Vero Beach, in partnership with the Florida Humanities Council, will present the Florida Humanities Series. The series of six presentations relating to Florida history, culture and issues are complimentary and all begin at 7 p.m.  

Sunday, Oct. 18 – Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass – A Meeting of the Minds, as portrayed by Charles Everett Pace and George Frein in recognition of the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and the 150th anniversary of his election to the presidency.Thursday, Dec. 3 – Telling’ It Like It Is, presented by Hank Mattson, Cracker cowboy poet, recounting the life and times of Florida cattlemen over the past 400 years.   Thursday, Jan. 7 – The Florida Dream, a 2007 Emmy-winning PBS documentary, presented by Gary Mormino, PhD, historian and 2003 Humanist of the Year, is a history of Florida since WWII, based on his 2005 book Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams.Thursday, Feb. 25 – Talking Drums, presented by Myron Jackson, African American drummer and story-teller gives a history of African drumming as it changed and spread from Africa to America.Thursday, March 11 – In Their Own Words, a documentary by Mike Jepson, PhD, Marine Anthropologist, with stories of fishing families and communities from Cortez and Cedar Key, affected by new regulations and development pressures.Thursday, April 8 – From Hard Times to Hard Rock, presented by Seminole scholar Patsy West, relating the history and stories of Seminole Indian Tribes.  Information: Call (772) 778-5249 or visit www.theemersoncenter.org.
