Vero Beach celebrates Independence Day with fireworks

VERO BEACH — More than 15,000 Vero Beach residents and other Fourth of July revelers, will sit in awe and amazement Saturday night while the city regales them with its annual fireworks display starting around 9 p.m.  The show will last between 20 and 25 minutes and will be launched from Memorial Island.

Organizers recommend residents arrive half an hour early to Riverside Park, Royal Palm Pointe Park or Young Park to find a place to park and take a seat on the lawns.Fireworks watchers can also find a good vantage point on either the Barber Bridge or the 17th Street Bridge.Residents are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and coolers, according to Pat Rausch, of the parks department. Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Fire Rescue warns of dangers using illegal fireworks at home

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — With the arrival of the Fourth of July holiday, fire rescue crews want to remind residents that they can only set off legal fireworks in their backyard. "There are health dangers and dangers to the environment (from using illegal fireworks)," Fire Marshal David Johnson, with Indian River County Fire Rescue, said. "There could be skin burns and eye injuries." Legal fireworks include sparklers, Johnson said. Under state law, any firework that explodes or shoots in the air is considered illegal. Some illegal fireworks include shells and mortars, tube devices, Roman candles, rockets and firecrackers. Residents should still use caution when using sparklers.
