I don't understand the hateful comments directed at Dr. Roger Dearing, who ruled that the Vero Beach High School girls' lacrosse team had played too many out-of-state games last year and disqualified them from the state championship. (The team won a court order to continue playing and eventually won its fourth straight title.)
Dearing is the messenger, not the rule maker!

The middle of August, after Labor Day, two weeks before – who knows, who cares? Apparently, a lot of us care. Some say it comes down to money. Others, as it appears, thinks theirs is the ox that is getting gored. But, what about the kids? Oh, yeah, the kids, that is why we’re here, isn’t it? Or so they say. |

How about the hot potato of class size reduction? Let’s tackle that. This issue, as most issues, otherwise it wouldn’t be an issue, can be argued on both sides. This one, as most issues, has one side that is all about money and the other side about the benefits of spending that money. So, let me lay out one side, the money side. Take out your property tax bill and you will see that approximately half of that bill amount goes to the schools.
Stick with me on the analogy here. You have a pie and you cut it into quarters and each piece goes on a separate plate with a fork. You need 4 plates and 4 forks. Same pie. Cut each quarter in half. Now you need 8 plates and 8 forks. Cut each of those pieces in half and now you need 16 plates and 16 forks. |

Welcome to our first education blog. I have often said that I would never want to be president (too much 3rd party approval needed), BUT I would like to be king! You probably feel the same – If I were king, things would be different around here!
Well I hope this blog can satisfy some of this pent up power grab, and we can all play teacher or superintendent or governor or even KING!
If you were king, and the educational system is in dire need of reform, where would you start? At the top? At the bottom? At home? Is it the teachers' fault? The legislature? The superintendent's? The School Board? The parents (or lack thereof)? The media? The culture of mediocrity in America? The lack of employable skills being taught? |
