Sometimes treated as a pariah within the walls of his own Vero Beach City Hall, Councilman Brian Heady has found a place where he can go when he needs a little validation -- Indian River Shores.
To Heady, it seemed natural to attend a meeting of the Shores' Town Council last week to update them on what's going on with the utility issues. Heady didn't know he would get a standing ovation for being the only seated council member in recent memory to pay a visit to one of the Town's meetings.
"They're our customers, after all," Heady said after the meeting. "It shouldn't be odd for someone from the City of Vero Beach to go check in with its customers.

As this year comes to a close, I just want to take the opportunity to thank our readers for encouraging us here at VeroNews.com and our sister publication, Vero Beach 32963, to fully pursue the First Amendment.
Each week, I receive several calls, emails and letters from you, prodding us on in our efforts to bring to light the issues that are important to the taxpayers and the utility rate payers of Indian River County. You send us not only praise, but often great tips and suggestions about things we should dig into ASAP.

As most anyone who has been paying attention knows, there has been a little dust-up about Vero Beach Vice Mayor Sabe Abell not moving out of the Mayor's office after Kevin Sawnick was elected mayor to replace him on Nov. 6.
While Abell and others have strongly denied that he refused to vacate the mayoral office, the fact is that unlike all previous mayors, he did not move out when not re-elected. The weeks came and went, and still he was there.
But on Dec. 3, VeroNews.com reported that Sawnick had finally taken over the mayoral office, and we took a photo of his smiling face at the big desk in front of the city seal to prove it.

"I'll see you in court tomorrow."
Those were the last words City Attorney Charles Vitunac spoke to Councilman Charlie Wilson during Tuesday's Vero Beach City Council meeting. Vitunac glared at Wilson for a good couple of seconds after the words and, as things in real life do, this reminded me of a movie.
Anyone who has kids -- or is a kid at heart -- has probably watched every single one of the Harry Potter movies or read the books. Remember the scene where Draco Malfoy says to Harry Potter and Ron Weasley "see you at school" right after his dad menacingly said to Weasley Sr. "see you at work" and the recipients of the remarks were much more amused than menaced?

I think one of our city leaders is setting a very unfortunate example for children with his behavior in the game of office politics now going on at City Hall.
Vero Beach Vice Mayor Sabin Abell, who was demoted from Mayor as the result of the Nov. 3 election, has refused to hand over the mayor's office to newly elected Mayor 28-year-old Kevin Sawnick.
As the mother of a toddler, it distresses me that some adults -- and ones in their supposedly wiser senior years, to boot -- never learned some of those lessons that I'm trying to instill into my 2-year-old son. |
