First Presbyterian presents: Appalachian Winter, a Christmas Cantata
December 23, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
On Sunday, December 23, 2018, the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach will present a cantata for Christmas entitled, Appalachian Winter. Performances will take place during the 9am and 11am services in the church sanctuary at 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach, FL, 32960. Admission is free to the community.
Composed in the spirit of folk music, the cantata combines traditional sounds with more rustic elements creating a blend that is fresh and pleasing. Popular American carols like Away In a Manger and O Little Town of Bethlehem dance with traditional spirituals such as Children, Go Where I Send Thee and Go, Tell It on the Mountain. Sacred Harp tunes are re-tooled for Advent and stand alongside new versions of Shaker hymns and Appalachian melodies.
Jacob Craig, Director of Music and Arts at First Presbyterian, will bring in not only local professional guest wind musicians to join the church’s Chancel Choir and Youth String Orchestra, but also a specialized Bluegrass consort including flute, violin, cello, mandolin, and guitar. This will add an extra element of excitement to the performance sure to have audience members tapping their feet and clapping along.
Craig says, “I believe that the cantatas are an excellent way of showing a culmination of effort and intention. The congregation is used to seeing the choir perform on a weekly basis, and this is a great way for the choir to show a major project where every aspect of the service is able to be led by the choir. It allows them to act as continuous worship leaders in the service through a centralized theme and to engage many musicians from our community as well.”
