27 pounds of marijuana washes up on county beaches

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Two shipments of marijuana totaling 27 pounds were found on the beaches of Indian River County in recent weeks.

On May 14 and May 28, packages of marijuana washed up at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and at Golden Sands Beach, according to Det. Sgt. Anthony Civita of the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office’s Multi-Agency Criminal Enforcement Unit.

On May 14, authorities recovered 12.22 pounds and on May 28, a slightly larger shipment of 15.14 pounds was found, according to authorities.

There are a multitude of scenarios on how the packages could have reached the shore, according to Indian River County Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Eric Flowers.

They could have been lost in transit, the boat transporting the drugs could have sank, or the packages could have been ditched as law enforcement or the U.S. Coast Guard approached suspected smugglers.
