Empty the Shelters, the annual spring adoption event at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County, runs through Saturday, May 17, at 6230 77th St., Vero Beach. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Information is available at hsvb.org.

Mini-Masterpieces, a Mother’s Day-inspired exhibit at Florida Art Chix Gallery, opens Thursday, May 1, and continues through Wednesday, May 29, at 951 Old Dixie Highway, Suite A4, in the Dixie Plaza, Vero Beach. The show features small works priced from $35 to $135, along with larger pieces by guest artists and work by gallery owners Judy Burgarella and Camy DeMario. Indian River Charter High School Orchestra Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 8, at First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, 2206 16th Ave. The concert will feature the IRCHS Quintet and the Full Charter Orchestra in a performance with music from Beethoven to modern spotlighting the school’s student musicians. The Sawbones vs. Jawbones Charity Softball Game returns at 5 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Holman Stadium at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex, 3901 26th St., Vero Beach. The evening opens with the United Way Little League Cup, followed by the main game at 6:45 p.m. The annual matchup between Indian River County doctors and lawyers benefits United Way of Indian River County and is known for friendly competition, community turnout and concession sales. The Painted Life of Gregory Gillespie, a documentary screening and discussion, is set for 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Dr. The free Second Saturday program includes the 90-minute film and a conversation with director Evan Goodchild and Rick Segal, collector, film producer and museum board chair. The Pirate and Fairy Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at McKee Botanical Garden, 350 U.S. 1, Vero Beach. The family event will include games, crafts and entertainment in a themed day designed for children and families. The festival is part of McKee’s spring lineup of community programs.
