INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A body discovered buried near a berm off the side of State Road 60 Monday prompted two separate investigations – one criminal and the other reviewing the death itself, officials said. The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was conducting the death probe, while the Broward County Sheriff’s Office was handling the criminal case.

“Deputies believe they know who the (deceased) person is,” Indian River County sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Joe Abollo said.

Abollo said the individual’s next of kin has not yet been notified. The person’s identity was not publicly released; the town they were from was not available.

It was unclear if a suspect had been arrested. Few details were available about the connection between the death and Broward County.

Abollo said local deputies got a call from Broward County sheriff’s officials Monday morning about the case. Deputies from both agencies traveled to the western part of Indian River County, where they found the human remains off S.R. 60 and mile marker 8, east of Florida’s Turnpike and the Yeehaw Junction, Abollo said.

The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Fort Pierce. An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday, Abollo said.

Broward County Sheriff’s spokesperson Miranda Grossman said homicide unit detectives are investigating the case. Grossman said the investigation is ongoing and that additional information cannot be released at this time.
