VERO BEACH — U.S. Coast Guard continued to comb the ocean for any sign of John Peters, who police said disappeared after jumping into the water Monday evening. Vero Beach police were searching the shoreline for Peters, 27, of Vero Beach, spokesperson Kelsea Marty said.

An Indian River County sheriff’s helicopter also tried to find Peters, but was unsuccessful, according to the missing person report.

“The search will continue until we’ve exhausted all information related to the search,” Coast Guard Petty Officer Nicole Groll said. Coast Guard and police began searching for Peters on Tuesday, officials said.

Coast Guard officials were using boats and aircrafts to scan the waters for Peters.

Police on Wednesday obtained surveillance footage that captured Peters go into the ocean near the Flamevine Lane Beach Access, Marty previously said.

“There is video evidence of him entering the water shortly after 6 p.m. His family has been notified of the video,” Marty said in a previous statement. “His (brother) found his clothes and sandals on the beach in the sand north of Flamevine Lane Beach Access.”

Witnesses said Peters was alone having a drink about 5 p.m. Monday at Waldo’s Restaurant. Police think Peters walked south to the Flamevine Lane Beach Access.

Surveillance video captured Peters remove his jacket, shirt, hat and sandals, police said. The footage showed Peters only wearing shorts when he jumped into the water, Marty previously said.

Peters’ brother found Peters’ black 2013 Hyundai Tucson parked in the 3100 block of Ocean Drive, reports show. Police said Peters’ phone had previously pinged near Humiston Beach Park.

Officers did not find the phone, Marty said.

Vero Beach police issued an alert on social media Tuesday asking for the public’s help in finding Peters. Anyone with information on Peters’ whereabouts should call the Coast Guard Sector Miami at 305-535-4472.
