INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A body was found in a pickup truck in a shopping center parking lot Friday evening, prompting a death investigation, sheriff’s officials said. There were no immediate signs of foul play, Indian River County spokesperson Lt. Joe Abollo said.

“Once deputies arrived, they could see through the driver window and observed what appeared to be a decomposing body,” Abollo said. “The cause of death and identification of the deceased is unknown at this time.”

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle leaking red fluids at the South Vero Square shopping mall. A foul odor was also reported.

The mall is north of Oslo Road and east of U.S. 1.

Detectives and crime scene technicians searched around the truck, gathering information. It was unclear how long the remains had been in the vehicle.

The body was taken to the medical examiner’s office. The pickup was placed into evidence at the sheriff’s office, Abollo said.
