Christine Joan Schroeder, of the 100 block of 41st Court, Vero Beach, was charged with aggravated battery and child neglect. Schroeder was released Monday from the Indian River County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

Indian River County sheriff’s deputies spoke to the man about 10 p.m. Monday. The man, who is Schroeder’s ex-boyfriend, told deputies he was at her home earlier when they began to argue.

The two were outside in front of the residence when Schroeder punched the man about a dozen times, reports show. The man said Schroeder went in the home, grabbed the shovel and came back out.

The two continued arguing before Schroeder tried to choke the man, reports show. The man said Schroeder swung the shovel at him several times, striking him at least once on the left side of his face.

Deputies said the man had a large cut on his cheek. When deputies went to Schroeder’s home, they found the front door unlocked, Schroeder unconscious in the master bedroom and her 7-year-old daughter asleep, reports show.

Emergency medical services responded and treated Schroeder, who was handcuffed when she awoke. Deputies said Schroeder, who was heavily intoxicated, admitted to drinking alcohol while taking sedative drugs.

Deputies arrested Schroeder and booked her into the county jail. Schroeder has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 15, court records show.
