Man charged with capital sexual battery on child

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A 56-year-old man who deputies said performed several sexual acts on a child over the past five years, was jailed Thursday. The victim, a 15-year-old boy, told officers the acts began when he was 10 years old, reports show.

Thomas Dewayne Holmes was charged with capital sexual battery. Holmes was held Friday at the Indian River County Jail on $1,000,000 bond.

Holmes, who is from Vero Beach, had moved to Oklahoma about two weeks ago, reports show. Holmes was visiting the city and was found at Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach at the time of his arrest, deputies said.

Sallisaw Police Department in Oklahoma contacted the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office Wednesday about reports of sexual battery. Sallisaw police told local deputies the acts happened in Indian River County and Oklahoma.

The boy told an adult family member about the sexual acts, reports show. Sallisaw police conducted two controlled phone calls between Holmes and the boy’s relative on Thursday.

In the recorded calls, Holmes admitted to engaging in sexual acts with the boy, reports show.

Holmes was arrested and booked into the county jail. Holmes has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 19, court records show.
