VERO BEACH — The body of a 59-year-old man was found in a wooded area in the city Thursday morning, prompting a death investigation, police officers said. Vero Beach police officers later classified the death as a homicide and asked for the public’s help in solving the crime.

Officers identified the body as Allen Brent Hamilton. Police said Hamilton was a transient who traveled between Vero Beach and Melbourne.

Vero Beach police officers responded to reports of a body found about 8 a.m. in the 2500 block of Granada Avenue, east of U.S. 1, spokesperson Master Officer Darrell Rivers said. A man walking his dog found the remains and dialed 911, Rivers said.

Further details on the body were not immediately available.

A police crime scene unit van along with a 19th District Medical Examiner’s sports utility vehicle were at the scene early Thursday. Officers asked motorists to avoid the area, which was cordoned off by police vehicles and personnel.

Hamilton’s death remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the case should contact police Det. Dan Brumley at 772-978-4660.
