Martha Louise Bossie Blair, 84

August 25, 1937 – November 14, 2021

Martha Louise Bossie Blair danced through the Pearly Gates while holding her daughter’s hand and reaching for the arms of her beloved husband Johnny, who preceded her into the everlasting life. We know she is rejoicing with Jesus Christ and enjoying her new angel wings, and is probably searching for Elvis or a good heavenly thrift store with her newfound freedom.

Martha was happy and loved life. She was a loving and faithful wife to Johnny (d. 2012), mother to Debra Carlton (Dave) of NC, and Randy Blair (d. 1999), loving daughter of Norwood (d. 1980) Carter and Elizabeth Carter (d. 2008) grandmother to Brett Blair, Kristen Blair and Katheryn Graves (Charlie) and best friend to Joyce Guentert. She was a teacher and antique dealer in her younger years. To say she will be missed is an understatement. Her fun loving spirit will remain a legacy. Family and friends near and far are welcome and encouraged to share their favorite memories of her. Whether dancing, shopping, loving on her dog, or junking, Martha was always smiling. She could cook a batch of fried trout better than anybody on this planet! Her hush puppies made your mouth water. And if it sparkled, she wore it.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, daughter Melanie, brother Roy Carter (Gail) and most of her friends. She often said that getting old wasn’t for the weak. She was a courageous cancer survivor. “You do what you have to do and then get on with life,” she’d say, “The good Lord knows your intentions.” In accordance with her wishes, there will be no funeral. If you feel compelled, make a donation to your favorite charity in her memory. Her heart was touched by children with special needs, rescue animals and anything patriotic. Many thanks to Treasure Coast VNA Hospice, and Cleveland Clinic nurse Ingrid for their loving care and compassion.

James Evan Higdon Jr., 82, Vero Beach

November 06, 1939 – November 11, 2021

James Evan Higdon Jr. beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, died at age 82 at Hospice House in Vero Beach, Fl., of complications from a fall.  His gentlemanly charm, warm heart and generosity will be forever missed.

Jim was born in the small town of  LaFollette, Tennessee, in 1939 to James and Inez Higdon. He graduated from LaFollette High School and went on to the University of Tennessee in 1963 earning a degree in Master of Science. He was a lifelong member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and was an active alumnus who frequented the chapter at UT. The brotherhood bonds he made carried him throughout his life. Jim was proud that he, his brother, Richard, son, Trey, his grandson, Dalton and his nephew, Dennis, were all Sigma Chis. Jim moved to Vero Beach from Texas with his family in 1971 and purchased the Petite Shop from his in-laws, the Bireleys. He operated the business successfully for over 50 years.

The consummate Southern Gentleman, Jim loved to entertain the ladies with his jokes and humor. Jim never strayed from his code of honor, opening your door, sliding back the chair, offering his warm coat, and always rising from his seat for his wife and daughter at the dinner table.  He simply elevated those around him to be better people. From childhood, Jim was an amazing musician, playing the trumpet and piano.  As a teenager, he frequently played “Taps” to honor servicemen who died protecting our Country.  Jim would light up a room when he took over the piano, playing “Honkey Tonk” for his family and friends. No holiday or family get together was complete until Jim started banging on the keys, belting out, “My Baby Left Me For The Garbage Man”.

Jim was so enormously proud of his children and grandchildren. To watch him dance with his daughter, and granddaughters would melt your heart.  The smile and joy radiating from Jim was blinding.  You will never find a more honorable, generous man. Jim often helped people in need but was very private about his generosity. This humble, true southern gentleman will be missed by so many!

Jim is survived by his wife of 30 wonderful years, Terry, children Laurie Connelly (Brian) Trey Higdon (Lori), stepchildren Carolyne Stoutt (Dave), Jeff Nichols (Nicole), grandchildren Dalton, Claire, Chandler, Avery, Mackenzie, Kaleigh, Adelaide and Logan, his brother, Richard and nephew Dennis (Ann Marie).

A “Celebration of Life” will take place on November 30th at 4:00 pm at Quail Valley at the Pointe, located at 1 Royal Palm Pointe, Vero Beach.

Walter retired from Local Union 77 in February of 2015. He was a 44-year member of Operating Engineers Local 77, joining the Local Union in 1977, as a Bulldozer Operator. Jane Theresa Paine (Morsch), 92, Barefoot Bay

March 14, 1929 – November 14, 2021

Jane Theresa Paine (Morsch)

Of Barefoot Bay, FL and formerly Canadice and Wayland, NY; Jane passed away peacefully on November  14, 2021 at the age of 92 in Sebastian, Florida.

Jane was born on March 14, 1929 to Anna (Hartfuss) and John (“Johann”) William Morsch in Wayland, NY.  She had two stepsisters (Rosella and Agnes) and 3 siblings (Dolores, Loretta, and John) and was the youngest child in her family.  At this time, the entire Morsch family led by John and Anna is home in heaven.

Jane graduated from Wayland High School in 1947 at age 18; she was a member of the school chorus. Jane then worked at Gunlocke Furniture Company (a company that is still in business to this day and headquartered in Wayland) for 2 years.  In the meantime, she met and dated Norman Emory Paine of Canadice and they were married on August 6, 1949 in Wayland.  The young couple built a house at 9243 Burch Hill Road in Canadice, NY at the site of a former hotel. They had 3 children: Robert John (born in 1951), Sharon Ann (born in 1953), and Richard Norman (born in 1957).  While Jane was busy attending to childcare for her growing family, Norm worked for Davenport Machine Tool Company in Rochester, NY.   The daily routine for Jane for many years was to get Norm on the road to Rochester early in the day for his arrival at Davenport by 7 AM, and then getting the children off to school in Honeoye (and to various school activities as they grew up).  Norm would have long days at work, so Jane was the key provider for her children.  She was very skilled at sewing, home repairs, and whatever was needed to keep a household in operation.

There were many family gatherings with the extended Morsch family during the 1950s through 1970s, with picnics in Canadice, Easter spent with Dolores’ family in Hornell, NY; Thanksgiving with Loretta’s family in Greece, NY; and at Christmas in Canadice with Jane’s family. Paine family gatherings were also held at the Burch Hill Road home in November for birthdays of Norm’s parents, Mary and Leslie. Jane was a devout Roman Catholic all her life and attended church services while living in Canadice at St. Mary’s Church in Honeoye.

Jane and Norm were constantly working on projects during their lifetimes, and they eventually decided to build new homes on land that Norm purchased from his father.  The routine they had was to build the new house, sell the house they were currently living in, and move in the new one.  From their first house at 9243 Burch Hill Road, they built four more houses in the area (some with a pond or a pool!), with much of the effort provided by their own labor.  The income from the sale of the houses allowed Norm to retire from Davenport early at age 59 in January 1986.

At this point, with an empty nest and no need to endure the harsh Canadice winters, Jane and Norm started to explore life in Florida. They settled in Barefoot Bay, Florida after a transitional period when they sold their remaining house and all of the accumulated farm-related equipment (tractors, etc.).  Their long-term residence in Barefoot has been 926 Evergreen St.

Norm passed away in 2008 at age 81.  Jane retained a network of close local friends in Barefoot Bay, and her daughter Sharon moved to Florida in September 2020 to help her with health care.

Jane is survived by her children: Robert and wife Beth Fuller of Medford, MA; Sharon of Barefoot Bay, FL; and Richard and wife Claudia of Pittsford, NY.  She has four grandchildren:  Natalie Poverchuk (Alex), Nathan Paine (Lan Jin), Emory Paine, and Raphael Cratsley, and three great-grandchildren (Devan and Haylee Cratsley and Johnny Poverchuk).

There will be celebrations of Jane’s life in several venues.  A mass was offered for Jane on November 14 at the Paulist Center in Boston, MA (home worship place for son Robert Paine).  A celebration of Jane’s life is planned in Florida (at Jane’s residence at 926 Evergreen St., Barefoot Bay, FL) on Saturday, December 4 between the hours of noon to 3 PM.  This will be an informal event for attendees to arrive and depart at their convenience; buffet-style food will be served.  This celebration will be followed by a mass offered for Jane at 4 PM on December 4 at St. Luke’s Church in Barefoot Bay.  A short memorial service followed by a buffet-style luncheon to celebrate Jane’s life will be held at the Canadice, NY United Methodist Church at 11 AM on Saturday, December 11.

For a collage of selected photos from Jane’s life, please view a 6-minute video available at Jane Paine lifetime photos – YouTube.

Finally, it is worth noting that after Norm’s death in 2008, Jane volunteered as a patient concierge at Sebastian Medical Center in Sebastian, FL.  She worked there two days per week until recent years when her health declined to the point where she could not manage the work.  Jane would later be a patient at the same facility in 2021 for a few visits until she passed away there on November 14.

Jane’s last act of caring, even after death, was to make an organ donation.   Most of her internal organs were failing at the time of death, but her largest organ – her skin – was able to be successfully donated.  Her skin was able to be used to benefit six women undergoing reconstructive breast surgery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jane’s memory to Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960 https://vnatc.org/donate/ .

Arrangements are entrusted to Strunk Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1623 North Central Avenue Sebastian, Florida 32958.

Diana Lynn Howell (nee Bauer), 72, Vero Beach

May 02, 1949 – November 17, 2021

Diana Lynn Howell (nee Bauer), age 72 of Vero Beach, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at home with her loving husband, Jay Howell at her side.

Diana was born in Niagara Falls, New York on May 2, 1949. She was raised in Buffalo, New York where she graduated from Niagara Wheatfield High School and then attended The University of Miami.

Diane was an adventurer! After college, she became a flight attendant for TWA where she took full advantage of her unlimited travel benefits. It was on a TWA flight where she met her first husband, Lonnie Prince. They resided in Kansas City, Missouri where they raised two sons, Cameron and Tyler and operated a successful dental practice.

Later, she married Jay Howell and they spent eight years living aboard a sailboat named Far Niente, traveling the Atlantic seaboard from Maine to the southern Bahamian Islands.  Inevitably, as with all sailors, they moved to dry land settling in Vero Beach.  However, their adventures were far from over, but now instead of navigating water, they navigated roads, traveling throughout the United States in their motor coach.

Diana was a devoted volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul in Vero Beach. Often arriving early and staying late, she loved the environment, the people and being a blessing to others. Her creativity and organizational skills made her a star volunteer where her co-workers called her the queen of DIY and re-purposing vintage items.  Never was her dedication more apparent when throughout the pandemic and even after her illness, she often worked on Sundays to avoid risk of exposure by working alone.

Diana is survived by her devoted husband, Jay; her children, Cameron (Kenzie) Prince and Tyler (Tricia) Prince; her beloved granddaughters, Katlyn and Teagan and her sister, Carol who selflessly devoted many weeks to helping care for her.  Diane is also survived by her step children, Kurt (Darcy) Howell, Brett (Katie) Howell, Kim Howell, Kelly Howell and step grandchildren, Allie, Emma, Jack and Lily. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Marian Bauer.

On November 28, 2021 at 2:00pm, a celebration of Diana’s life will be held at the Pointe West Country Club, 7500 14th Lane, Vero Beach, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, Diana requests that contributions be made to St. Vincent DePaul of Vero Beach, C/O Darlene Murphy, Treasurer, 1745 14th Avenue, Vero Beach, Florida, 32960.

Nancy McBride Allerman, 90, Vero Beach

November 22, 1931 – November 7, 2021

Mrs. Nancy McBride Allerman, born in Omaha Nebraska on November 22, 1931, died November 7, 2021 at her home in Vero Beach, Florida.

Nancy was born to Lyle and Hilfrie McBride, an actively devout Christian family.

She had an older brother, Lyle, and younger sister, Carol. They began each day by hearing their father read from the Bible at breakfast and never missed Sunday morning worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Omaha. It was there that Nancy began a lifelong commitment to the choir and beauty of sacred music as her faith began to grow.

Her education continued after high school at the Gulfport Jr. College in Gulfport, Mississippi; then she transferred to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she met and married Ken Allerman, a graduate student. Ken, a Jersey boy, took a job in education back home near his family, rising from teacher to principal to Superintendent of Schools while Nancy was a stay-at-home mother. They settled in the beautiful town of Kinnelon, in northern NJ where each summer Ken served as the Fayson Lakes Beach Director and the children spent idyllic summers lakeside.

The family grew with the birth of two sons and a daughter. Nancy became very active in the nearby Boonton Presbyterian Church. She sang in the choir, participated in the Presbyterian Women’s activities, taught Sunday School, and was ordained as an Elder. Active in her community as well, Nancy was on the board of the Kinnelon Library and the Pequannock Valley Mental Health Center. She also led a Girl Scout troop. Then, with the high school graduation of her youngest child, Nancy pursued her education at Ramapo College earning a degree in Psychology. She worked with the Dept. of Aging as an outreach counselor. Eventually she went on to earn her Master’s degree in Social Work at Rutgers University and was employed by the public school system as a Counselor. Her focus was high school students affected by drug and alcohol abuse.

When Ken’s first retirement coincided with Nancy’s, they decided to sell their NJ home and move near their oldest son. They bought a home in Keokuk, Iowa, a house on a hill overlooking the beautiful Mississippi River. This became their summer home while W. Palm Beach, FL (Singer Island) became their winter home. The snowbirds maintained this schedule for 16 years until their second retirement when they left Iowa permanently and moved to Vero Beach to be close to their second son. Her family today has grown to include eight grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Ken passed away in 2014 just after they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Nancy served her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ throughout her life. By her example, she was a beacon of hope and encouragement shining God’s light to all who met her.

Survivors include sister Carol Pirsch. Sons Jeff Allerman (Susan Brown), Kurt Allerman (Kim Allerman) and daughter Tracey Allerman Pilsch (Tom Pilsch).

Grandchildren: Katie Allerman Hussey (Justin Hussey), Ryan Allerman (Veronica Allerman), Lindy Allerman Stoner, (Joe Stoner) Madison Allerman, Dan Allerman, Becca Allerman, Matthew and Jonathan Pilsch, great grandchildren: Kylea and Kalynn Stoner, Henry, William and Olivia Allerman, Norah and Madelyn Hussey.

Lorraine found beauty in everything — from nature to the many special people she surrounded herself with. She was vibrant, generous, and always seized the moment. She believed that laughter was the best medicine, and would light up every room with her smile, even during her last dim days.

Peter Charles Homan, 82, Florida

March 13, 1939 – November 13, 2021

Peter C. Homan, 82 years old, received his complete healing and went home to the Lord on November 13, 2021. He is survived by Melodee, his wife of 59 years, of Sebastian, Florida; daughter Laura Rodrigue and her husband Craig, of Orlando, FL;  grandsons Zack, his wife Mariana, Cody, and Tyler; son Josh Homan and his wife Laurette, of Coral Springs, FL and granddaughters Milan and Meiling; grandchildren Kyle and Bryce Bunker of Tequesta, FL, and Christopher and Lily of Palm Beach, FL (all children of Jeanette); youngest sister Kate Smith, Homosassa, Fl; beloved nephew Robert Waddell of Hobe Sound, FL; nieces Debbie Hinson, Susan Lata, and nephew Anthony Lata, his wife Vicki, and grandnephews and grandnieces. He is predeceased by his son Matthew, daughter Jeanette, sisters Doris Waddell and Ann Homan, and nephew Peter Lata.

Born in Herkimer, NY to Hilton Shanahan Homan and Agnes Jones Homan, he grew up in Coconut Grove, FL with his three sisters. At an early age he developed an interest in mechanics, purchasing his own car against his father’s wishes at the age of fourteen. As a young man he joined the crew of a Porsche racing team, raced sailboats, worked as a mate on charter boats, and earned college money delivering sailboats between Miami and the Northeast along the Eastern Seaboard. Some of his most treasured memories were aboard the Anna R., a fishing charter, with Captain Ben Rathbun of Noank (Mystic) Connecticut.

Peter graduated from the University of Miami where he studied some engineering but graduated in Business. There he met his bride, Melodee Rogers. They married as college students and after graduation Peter was offered his first job by Harry E. Lennon with the company that became Granada Valve & Fitting; he spent his entire career with the company. As a salesman, sales manager, and later CEO, he represented a proprietary line of high-pressure fluid systems. His customers were NASA engineers, nuclear power plant operators, the petroleum and cruise ship industries, orange juice processors and the developers of Walt Disney World’s theme park as it emerged from the swamps of Central Florida. He learned Portuguese and fluent Spanish as he led the effort to develop Caribbean and South American markets. One of his last collaborations was the fledgling SpaceX company. Peter’s life experience was a collection of fascinating and historical stories of engineering and human endeavor, which he recounted throughout his life and sometimes wrote about with the encouragement of daughter Laura. His dedication to improving his sales team made him an avid motivator, trainer, and public speaker. His membership as a Toastmaster was a lifelong passion. His personal friendships with his salesmen and distributors were dear to him throughout his life.

Peter and Melodee welcomed four children: Laura, Josh, Matthew, and Jeanette. They moved from Vero Beach, Titusville, Jacksonville, Lauderhill, Indian Rocks, Coral Springs, and Jupiter as he and Melodee opened and developed regional offices for the company. The family enjoyed fishing excursions in the Florida Keys and the Atlantic Gulfstream aboard his boat, The Melodee, which he occasionally navigated to Bimini and the Bahamas on a whim. He is celebrated among anglers in Costa Rica for catching the first ever confirmed sailfish off the Atlantic Coast of the country.

Besides offshore fishing, Peter’s hobbies included running, photography, tennis, racquetball and coaching. In Coral Springs, he coached sons Josh and Matthew on soccer teams dubbed “The Porsche of Soccer,” in part due to his passion for excellence and partly a nod to his signature sports car, always a Porsche 911 Targa. He enjoyed scuba diving with Jeanette and became an avid horseback rider, along with Melodee. They lived 25 years on their mini ranch in Jupiter, Florida. Favorite vacations in this season of life including herding cattle in Utah and Montana.

As he wound down his corporate career, Pete remained an active member of Palm Beach Community Church, where the Lord placed him to serve as a children’s Sunday School teacher. His joy in leading the next generation was evident even in this Sunday morning responsibility. He taught his grandchildren to fish and helped to coach his grandsons’ baseball teams. He and Melodee became Miami Marlins baseball fans to share the sport with their children and grandchildren. His “retirement” was spent happily as an employee of Home Depot, first in Jupiter and eventually in Sebastian, FL. A dedicated and loyal employee, he kept up a weekly shift schedule at his store, where he joked with customers and connected with the local “doers”, until his heart gave out one day on the way to work. This was just as he would have wanted.

No services are planned at this time.
