WABASSO — A 60-year-old Sebastian man was killed after his vehicle veered off the roadway, struck a tree and burst into flames early Thursday, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

The wreck happened about 10:30 a.m. on U.S. 1, just north of 79th Street, highway troopers said. Troopers said the man was traveling north in a sedan.

For an unknown reason, the sedan crossed into the southbound lanes and continued traveling north against incoming traffic, troopers said. The sedan then truck a tree on the shoulder and caught fire.

The sedan driver was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce, where doctors pronounced him dead. Troopers said the man was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

FHP is no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons. Highway troopers will investigate the cause of the wreck.
