Edward Joseph O’Rourke, 89, Vero Beach

February 26, 1932 – October 12, 2021

Edward Joseph O’Rourke, age 89, died peacefully Tuesday, October 12 at VNA Hospice House.

Ed was the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. A Brooklyn Dodgers fan as a boy, after the team broke his heart and left his native Brooklyn, Ed eventually became a lifelong Mets and Jets fan, teaching his only child, Margaret, how to accurately keep a scorecard, play call for a 3rd and long, and live with the heartache of losing seasons.

He had been a passionate reader, hand and paddle ballplayer, saltwater fisherman, pinochle enthusiast and, in retirement, an avid bridge player. Those who knew him well enjoyed his sense of humor. Ed’s kind, generous spirit was fueled by a desire to serve – an attentive only child to Edward Francis and Florence (Tighe) O’Rourke, Ed went on to proudly serve his nation in the United States Coast Guard.  After that, he bravely served his community, first as a member of the NYPD for five years, then as a member of the FDNY’s H&L 101 for 27 years.  A devout Catholic, Edward served his God through his humble, prayerful life.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret (McGrath) to whom he was married 50 years. They resided on Long Island, NY prior to retiring to Vero Beach.

Edward doted on his daughter, Margaret, son-in-law Stefan, and, most especially, his grandson William.  His legacy of generosity of spirit lives on in them. For nearly 20 years breakfast out with Margaret and Will on their visits to Vero was a highlight for Ed, and Will’s bringing breakfast to him in his final years a testament to the special place that time together held in the hearts of all three.

Due to Covid, arrangements are private.  In lieu of flowers, make time to take a loved one to breakfast.
