VERO BEACH — A 30-foot long sailboat that ran aground Wednesday at South Beach Park could still be seen resting along the sand and surf Thursday morning.

Details on the condition of the person sailing the boat were not available. It was unclear when the boat was expected to be towed from the beach.

There was little information available Thursday on what caused the vessel to crash.

Officials at the beach said a young girl was sailing the boat to Jacksonville Tuesday night. The girl fell asleep and the boat crashed into the shoreline, officials said.

Beach officials discovered the boat the next day.

Authorities said they briefly closed South Beach Park on Wednesday morning to remove debris. The area reopened to beachgoers by Thursday.

Vero Beach police were expected to release more information on the boat crash. No further details were immediately available.
