Police said Vincent Edward Whaley lived with his 86-year-old mother and was her main caretaker, reports show. Officers said the woman’s friend witnessed the incident and called police.

Whaley, of the 1700 block of Sunrise Lane, Sebastian, was charged with battery on person 65 or older and hinder communication to 911. Whaley was held Thursday at the Indian River County Jail on $10,000 bond.

It was unclear what prompted the incident.

Officers responded to reports of abuse about 4:30 p.m. at Whaley’s home. Whaley’s mother told police her son is constantly verbally abusive toward her.

The woman said Whaley twisted her arm earlier almost to the breaking point, reports show. Officers saw the woman had bruising on her left wrist and hand.

Whaley denied hurting his mother, reports show.

Police arrested Whaley and booked him into the county jail. Whaley was ordered to not have any contact with his mother, court records show.

Whaley has an arraignment at 8:45 a.m. Aug, 13.
