Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash. Troopers are no longer releasing the names of crash victims because of privacy reasons.

The wreck involving the bicycle and a red 2010 Nissan Altima happened Saturday morning at northbound A1A and Wildlife Way, just southeast of Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, Indian River County deputies said.

Troopers said a 49-year-old Melbourne man was driving the Nissan on northbound A1A. The bicyclist was traveling in the same direction on A1A on the right paved shoulder.

For an unknown reason, the Nissan driver swerved onto the shoulder and struck the bicyclist, troopers said. The bicyclist was thrown into the grass shoulder.

The man was taken by ambulance to Sebastian River Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. The crash remains under investigation.
