VERO BEACH — Fire rescue crews said they used the jaws of life tool to free a man trapped in his car after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday.
The crash left the man with non-life threatening injuries, Indian River County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Roger Dion said. A woman who was also hurt had minor injuries.
The collision, involving an Audi and a Kia, happened about 4:40 p.m. at 36th Street and U.S. 1, north of Aviation Boulevard, Dion said. The man driving the Kia was trapped inside.
Fire crews cut open the Kia’s roof and driver’s door to free the man, Dion said. The man was flown to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce.
The woman in the Kia’s front passenger seat was taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital with minor injuries, Dion said.
A woman and 5-year-old child in the Audi were both taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital as a precaution, Dion said. The ages of the adults involved in the wreck and where they live were not immediately available.
Dion said the Audi and Kia both had heavy damage from the impact. Vero Beach police were investigating the cause of the collision.
